What you will do: The Cornell University Hospital for Animals (CUHA) seeks a Nursing Unit Supervisor, who is a seasoned and effective licensed veterinary technician leader who can effectively support and improve patient care excellence, safety and DVM student training as a working leader within our skilled and seasoned nursing team. The unit leadership team will provide clinical operational oversight to our 24/7 nursing care units including ICU. Responsibilities will include 24-hour accountability for quality patient care, management of our central nursing care units, patient safety and comfort, efficient work and teaching environment, protocol and regulatory compliance and a positive workplace culture that encourages individual growth and organizational change. This position will be instrumental in supporting and improving our clinical nursing units in order to maintain our standard of care and strong DVM teaching program which develops practice ready, critically thinking veterinarians with strong communication skills. Key Responsibilities: Lead and mentor an emerging leadership team in our centralized nursing care units to: Provide expertise in staffing and scheduling; coordinate nursing human resource matters, including but not limited to evaluating staffing needs, recruitment and hiring of staff, orientation of new staff, documentation and monitoring staff performance, directing workflow and establishing work schedules. Work alongside Hospital Leadership to redefine "Career Progression" track as to provide growth opportunity and fulfillment for our Licensed Veterinary Technicians. Serve as a facilitator and coach to nursing staff; seeking and providing regular and constructive feedback, as well as continual ongoing awards and recognition for staff accomplishments and milestones; understand and fully support the critical nature of effective and honest, timely feedback to a high-performance workforce Plan, create, implement and administer a broad array of group and individually tailored training, professional development, and on-boarding programs for the hospital system with our unit training coordinator and hospital trainer. Develop, implement, update on a rolling basis, and maintain clinic/nursing SOP's that are consistent with current veterinary practice; exercise considerable judgment in applying professional knowledge when solving nursing problems within established policies and practices. Serve as liaison between nursing care units and other patient care services in our companion animal hospital Collaborate with the service chiefs, faculty members and trainee clinicians, clinical administration and other managers to identify "bottlenecks" and formulate solutions and initiatives to remove barriers in medical operations that would impede the clinicians from providing exemplary patient care and customer experience. Plan and execute emergent and planned hospital projects in collaboration with the hospital medical, business and project leadership. Build effective relationships with a variety of college and hospital administrative units (including IT, HR, Facilities, equipment management), Assist in the effective use of hospital IT infrastructure for efficient operations, including record keeping, communications, coordination of clinician, patient, staff and student scheduling, as well as patient billing. Work with management to ensure compliance with Federal and State law regulations, and applicable accrediting and review organizations. What are the Qualifications? Associate's Degree in Veterinary Technology, NYS licensure and 5-7 years progressive responsibility as a leader in a specialty companion animal hospital nursing unit (or equivalent combination of education and experience); Bachelor's degree and VTS ECC preferred. Ability to lead and work effectively and collaboratively in a fast-paced, matrix organizational environment with limited guidance. Experience in a teaching environment and work experience in a 24/7 veterinary hospital is strongly desired. Understand the critical balance between the administrative, teaching, and clinical functions in the veterinary heath care system. Demonstrated excellent judgement and experience in decision-making; Has experience in developing and executing quality improvement, training and safety initiatives Demonstrate initiative and self-motivation to follow through on responsibilities in a timely manner.
