We have an opening for a Post-College Appointee (PCA) to participate in projects to develop cutting-edge Carbon nanoyarns and other novel materials and processes supporting a variety of Laboratory missions for the National Ignition Facility (NIF) and other related projects. As part of a multi-disciplinary team within the NIF Target Fabrication group, you will work on chemical processes, mechanical testing, microscopic inspection, materials characterization as well as micro-assembly fabrication. These projects are aimed at developing the next generation of samples, called targets, for advanced experiments on the NIF. This position is in the NIF Optics and Target Materials group within the Materials Science Division.

Essential Duties
- Execute wet-chemistry laboratory experiments including synthesis, chemical processing, bonding, UV curing, and thermal processing.
- Fabricate micro-assemblies of very fine and small components for performance testing.
- Perform materials and surface characterization such as optical microcopy, SEM, FTIR, DSC, ellipsometry, etc.
- Perform mechanical strength testing of delicate samples.
- Keep an accurate and detailed laboratory notebook; generate, organize, and analyze experimental data; and participate in research planning. Prepare progress reports and presentations to supervisor/mentor and project teams.
- Provide technical support to engineers and scientists in research and development projects.
- Develop, define and prepare operating procedures while maintaining laboratory safety standards.
- Serve as a key team member in cutting-edge optics research and development.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Recent BS/MS in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or in a related field.
- Experience performing wide-ranging experiments in a chemistry laboratory and/or cleanroom setting.
- Experience working with small components and using microscopic assembly techniques.
- Experience handling delicate samples and doing microscopic characterization.
- Knowledge of general laboratory fundamentals and best practices.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to communicate technical information effectively with technicians, peers, and managers.
- Experience operating PC and/or Macintosh computers to collect, analyze, and document scientific results.
- Interpersonal skills necessary to work in a collaborative research environment and interact with a diverse set of scientists, engineers, technicians and other technical and administrative staff.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with chemical synthesis and processing operations, coating operations, and thermal processing.
- Familiarity with materials and mechanical characterization tools.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Note: This is a one-year Post College Appointee with the possibility of extension to a maximum of two years.Eligible candidates are recent graduates within two years of the month of the Bachelor's or Master's-degree at the time of the employment offer.
